“My flux capacitor isn't working." That's what I tell myself when executive function fails me and I can't start the thing I need to start.
You know the days when your brain just... won't? This is how I've started talking to myself about it. Hardware problem. Not a personal defect. 😮💨
The flux capacitor makes time travel possible. When it's not working, the DeLorean is just a car. It doesn't mean the car is broken forever. It doesn't mean Doc Brown screwed up. It just means that particular piece of hardware is temporarily offline.
That's executive function for a lot of creative minds, especially those of us with ADHD. It's a piece of hardware. And sometimes it's just offline.
For years, I beat myself up about this. Why couldn't I just focus? Why was starting tasks so hard? Why did I need so much structure when everyone else seemed to wing it just fine?
But I've learned that my brain works differently. Different hardware.
So when I can't get my brain to cooperate, I don't tell myself I'm lazy or undisciplined. I tell myself my flux capacitor isn't working. And then I ask what THIS brain needs right now to get moving.
Sometimes it's body doubling. Sometimes it's breaking the task into something absurdly small. Sometimes it's accepting that today isn't the day for deep focus work and switching to something more forgiving.
The systems I build for clients (especially creative agency founders) honor this. So many of you have brains like mine. You don't need another productivity hack built for someone else's brain.
You need systems that work with your brain.
What does your brain need today to get moving?

📚 The Learning Lounge
A cozy corner where we share the latest insights, ideas, and takeaways from books, videos, articles, and more.
Most AI slide generators churn out generic, "pretty sad" results because they pull from the open web instead of your specific expertise. This tutorial shows you how to anchor NotebookLM to your own vetted sources, ensuring your client presentations actually reflect your agency's unique IP rather than AI-hallucinated filler.
We often treat AI as a technical tool to be "learned," but for a growing agency, it's actually a management skill of breaking down tasks and judging quality. If your team has hit a wall with ChatGPT, it’s likely because they’re missing the middle-layer skills—like iterative refinement and frontier recognition—that move a project from 70% to 95% completion.
If your "messy middle" phase of creative projects feels scattered across too many apps, Apple’s Freeform is a surprisingly powerful (and free) alternative for mood boarding and Kanban-style project tracking. It’s built for the non-linear way founders think, allowing you to connect dots and visualize workflows without the rigid constraints of traditional PM software.
